When personal routines need more support.

Getting dressed, bathing, or moving around the home can become difficult even when your loved one still manages other parts of the day independently. Personal care is a place to begin when your family needs help with those hands-on tasks. Start with the moments that have changed, rather than assuming help is needed with everything.

What support can include.

Bathing & dressing

Support with bathing, dressing, and toileting. Explain your loved one’s preferences, what they manage independently, and where assistance is needed.

Meals & mobility

Assistance with meals and snacks, walking, and mobility. Share the layout of the home and any mobility concerns when discussing suitable support.

Rest & reminders

Help with bedding and sleeping routines, plus medication reminders. Familiar timings and habits are useful details to bring to your care conversation.

Plan around the person, not just the task.

For example, a morning routine might involve help getting washed and dressed before breakfast. Use that routine to describe your needs: which tasks require help, what your loved one prefers, and when family members are already available.

Our listed services include support for people with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Describe memory changes and any health-related needs so you can confirm whether the available support is suitable. If care involves medication administration or clinical tasks, ask explicitly about those needs; medication reminders alone do not describe that level of support.

Make personal care comfortable and familiar.

1. Respect personal preferences

Tell us how your loved one prefers bathing, dressing and other personal routines to be handled. Their privacy, comfort and choices help shape the discussion.

2. Describe hands-on assistance

Describe where hands-on help is needed, including toileting, getting dressed, meals or mobility. Be clear about what your loved one manages independently and what needs assistance.

3. Plan for changing routines

Discuss the times when personal care is most useful and how changes in mobility or daily needs would be communicated. Confirm the agreed tasks before visits begin.

QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Practical answers for your next step.

What does personal care include?

Our listed services include bathing and dressing, toileting help, assistance with meals and mobility, bedding and sleeping support, and medication reminders. Discuss the specific tasks and level of help needed before choosing a care arrangement.

Can personal care include companionship?

Both personal care and companionship are listed services. Describe your loved one’s whole day, including time spent alone, so you can ask about combining the support they need.

How much does care cost, and are there minimum hours?

The right questions depend on the tasks and schedule you need covered. Before agreeing to care, request the rate, any minimum hours, payment arrangements, and any additional charges. Confirm the total for your proposed schedule.

Can we request a consistent caregiver?

Explain that continuity matters to your family. Ask how caregivers are matched, whether the same person can cover your schedule, and what happens if that person is unavailable. Confirm the arrangement before care begins.

How will our family stay informed?

Bring up who should receive updates, how you prefer to be contacted, and what changes you want reported. Ask how communication and concerns will be handled for the arrangement you are considering.

Talk about your loved one’s care.

A 30-minute conversation is a place to explain what has changed, ask your questions, and explore the support available.
